Background and Main Activities

- Activities related to the NPHC1385 (2006) began in May 2003. Studies on the census related issues, proposed in the same year, were finalized in 1383(2004). Under the supervision of Research Council of the SCI, seven studies are being prepared at present. The headquarters of the 1385 (2006) Census officially began the related activities in late 1382(2003).

To put into operation the decisions made by the headquarters, 7 census groups and 19 committees were formed. 151 persons were officially appointed to census related jobs. While studies are being carried out, other intensive activities regarding the preparation of design, studying the information items needed by government agencies as well as finalizing questionnaire items are underway.  In addition to the above-mentioned activities, the following important measures have been taken:

- Preparing of job descriptions of the census headquarter, groups and committees

- Preparing of the activities timetable

- Describing Census goals

-Justifying the needs to the pilot census

- Determining the pilot census data items

- Determining geographic coverage of the pilot census

- Launching the web site of the national census of population and housing

In the conduct of the national census, the SCI benefits from the cooperation of other organs and ministries such as the Ministry of the Interior, Iranian Demographic Association, Iranian Statistical Society, National Cartographic Center, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting Organization, Management and Planning Organization and its provincial branches, Statistical Research Center and the academia. Representatives of the mentioned agencies and groups take part in the meetings of the census groups and committees.

The pilot census and the census are to be implemented in Aban (October) of the years 1384(2005) and 1385(2006) respectively
