According to the 1375 Population and Housing Census (the latest census), total population of the country was 60055488 .The population density was 36 . 7  persons per square kilometer . Of the total population , 61 . 3  and 38 . 3  percents lived in urban and rural areas of whom 50 . 8  and 49 . 2  percents were males and females respectively . Distribution of age groups :

Number of birth has been 1233873 in 1384, of which 815445 and 418428 were in urban and rural areas. Of the total birth 630771 and were male and female.In addition, number of deaths has been 361326 of which 238235 and 123091 were in urban and rural areas in the same year.

In the year 1384, there have been 787671 marriages of which 558424 and 229247 were in urban and rural areas. Number of registered divorces have been 84243 of which 70024 and 14219 were in rural and urban areas.

According to the 1375 Population and Housing Census , economically - active population 10 years of age and over comprised 16027000, of whom 14572000 (90 . 9%) and 1456000 (9.1%) were employed and unemployed respectively. Out of a non - economically active population of 28822000, 12633000 (43.8%), 13193000(45.8%) and 1298000(10.4%) percents were schoolchildren , housewives and the retired as well as income recipients .

Population estimation for the year 1384,was 68467412 of which 45650253 and 22817160 were inhabited in  urban and rural areas.
